SALTY SESAME RINGS
A girl can never say “NO” to the perfect ring, especially if its from the perfect guy! Since I am married and do have the perfect ring, I just have settle down with these delicious sesame rings. Not just me, but my husband also.
You see I have been on a cooking mission lately and it has been incredibly rewarding and challenging. Love testing out new recipes, but I exaust myself out after spending endless hours in the kitchen. Good or bad, its an experiment!
I’m a big fan of anything salty or sweet or a combination of both. I have been meaning to try salty treats, which happen to be very popular Turkish cookies and treats. The trick is the find the simplest recipe possible, often the recipes call for too many ingredients and often can turn into a complex recipe. When I saw these Sesame Rings on Iffet’s blog @ My Turkish Kitchen, I knew I had to try. The recipe was quite simple and its turned out perfect, I kind of over cooked it, but never the less it was delicious!
Salty Sesame Rings
adapted from Iffet’s My Turkish Kitchen
Ingredients:
-
1 stick of salted butter (at room temperature)
-
1/3 cup of vegetable oil
-
1/3 cup of plain yogurt or sour cream
-
1 teaspoon of vinegar
-
1/2 tablespoon of salt
-
1/2 tablespoon of baking soda
-
1 egg yolk
-
2 1/2 cups + 3 tablespoons of flour
Topping:
-
1 egg white
-
2 cups of sesame seeds (roasted seeds optional)
-
1/4 cup of nigella seeds (optional)
Preparation:
-
Pre heat the oven to 350 F – Place a parchment paper on a baking sheet or spray down with non stick spray.
-
Into a large mixing bowl, add in the butter, yogurt, vegetable oil, egg yolk and vinegar and whisk well. Then add baking soda and salt and mix.
-
Add in the flour one cup at a time, kneading first with the spatula, then with your hands. Knead the dough until you have reached a soft consistency.
The dough should be have reached a soft consistency – not to hard or sticky on your hands. Add a couple of more spoons of flour if your dough to sticky. Once you have reached the right softness, you may begin to roll out your rings. -
Break the dough into small parts (about the size of a half walnut). Roll out the dough in between your palms or a hard cold surface dusted with flour. Roll out to about 3 inches long and then shape into small rings. (See pictures below.)
Continue to do this until each of the small doughs have been formed into a small rings. Don’t worry if the sizes are not equal or perfect. -
In two separate bowls: add the sesame seeds into one dish and the egg white into the other.
-
Dip the rings first into the egg white and then dipping into the sesame seeds. Making sure all sides are coated with sesame.
-
Place each ring onto the baking sheet, once all of the rings are coated place into the oven to bake.
-
Bake until the rings are just golden brown. About 30-40 minutes.
-
Remove from oven and let cool for 5 minutes and serve!
-
Serve warm or at room temperature.
